Belmont Stewards Suspend Jose Santos for 10 Days

ELMONT, N.Y. — Jockey Jose Santos, who returned from an unsuccessful stay in California to resume riding in New York, was suspended for 10 calendar days Thursday for what Belmont stewards termed “careless riding” during the seventh race Wednesday.
Santos’s mount, Alywar, finished first but was disqualified and placed third for bearing out through the stretch and making repeated contact with third-place Uptown Gala. The disqualification followed a stewards’ inquiry and a claim of foul by Art Madrid Jr., Uptown Gala’s rider.
Santos’s suspension, slated to run July 21-30, was delayed pending appeal.
