Nation IN BRIEF : WISCONSIN : Twice-Labeled Tuna Recalled From Stores
- Share via
A food distributor in La Crosse, Wis., voluntarily recalled about 30,000 cans of tuna after shoppers found cat food labels under labels that indicated the tuna was intended for humans. Gateway Foods recalled the cans of IGA Chunk Tuna in Water when it was found that labels underneath identified the product as Star-Kist’s 7th Heaven cat food. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said there was no need for a health warning because the contents were safe for human consumption. But an FDA spokeswoman said the agency was conducting tests to determine whether the contents were intended for cats or people. The firm that sent the cans to Gateway said the 7th Heaven labels were put on by accident and when the mistake was found, IGA labels were put on top.
