An 18-year-old man was shot when he refused to surrender his bicycle to someone who wanted to rob him in City Heights, police said Tuesday.
Courtney Carradine was riding the bicycle in the 3600 block of 44th Street about 9:35 p.m. Monday when two men in a gray Ford Escort drove up to him, said Detective Norman Hardman of the San Diego Police Department.
According to Carradine, the passenger got out of the car and demanded his money and bike, Hardman said. When Carradine replied that he didn’t have any money, the man said he would just take the bike.
When Carradine refused to give it up, the man pulled out a handgun and began firing at him, Hardman said.
Carradine began running with his bike, and, when he realized that he had been hit, he dropped the bike and continued running, Hardman said.
Carradine got help from a resident of a nearby apartment, who called police, Hardman said. He was listed in fair condition Tuesday at Mercy Hospital with a bullet wound in the left arm, a hospital spokesman said.
The bike, which was stolen after Carradine had abandoned it, had a value of about $100, Hardman said.
