Chris Riley of Madison High, the 1990 San Diego Section individual champion and ’91 runner-up, shot a par-72 Tuesday and trails Tiger Woods of Cypress and Justin Klein of Phoenix, Md., by two strokes after the first round of the 44th USGA Junior Amateur Golf Championship in Orlando, Fla.
Riley, who finished second to Woods in last week’s Optimist Junior World tournament at Torrey Pines, shot 36 on the front and back sides.
Play on the 7,027-yard Bay Hill Club course was suspended in mid-afternoon for two hours, 37 minutes by a thunderstorm, forcing the 42 teen-aged players still on the course to seek shelter in nearby homes.
Woods, 15, had a bogey-free round, and Klein, 17, had a chance at a spectacular round until he double-bogeyed the 18th hole.
SAILING
America-3 launched its second America’s Cup Class yacht Tuesday. The boat was christened Defiant by Gloria Melges, wife of helmsman Buddy Melges. It was built by Eric Goetz Custom Sailboats in Bristol, R.I.
America-3 has also recently purchased two Etchells 22 boats to be used in match-race training for the team. The two boats finished first and third in a five-race regatta last weekend. The team of Cam Lewis, Bob Billingham and Bill Ruh took first.
