Chemical Companies: Du Pont reported second-quarter net income of $549 million, or 81 cents a share, down 21% from $694 million in the year-ago period. The Wilmington, Del.-based company had sales of $9.8 billion, down 2% from last year. Union Carbide Corp. reported second-quarter net income of $46 million, or 36 cents a share, down 60% from $116 million in the year-ago period.
