Mid-July Car Sales Down 4.8%: Sales of domestically made cars and trucks fell 4.8% in the 10-day period. The three American makers continued to struggle, while Japanese transplants continued to enjoy strong sales. General Motors Corp.’s vehicle sales fell 3.7% from a year ago, Ford Motor Co.’s dropped 15.4%, and it was estimated that Chrysler’s sales slipped 3%. Sales of North American-made vehicles with Japanese nameplates jumped 17.3%.
