COUNTYWIDE : County Nets $20,000 in Bad-Check Fines

Ventura County’s general fund is more than $20,000 richer this year because of the district attorney’s program to collect on bad checks, county officials said.
The program, which began in 1986, resulted in the collection of about $20,600 a month in fines during fiscal year 1990-91, according to officials in the district attorney’s office. Costs of operating the program averaged $18,800 a month, with the remainder going to the county’s general fund.
More than $2.4 million was collected from bad check writers and returned to merchants throughout the county in the past five years, they said.
The bad-check unit received an average of 1,213 non-sufficient funds or closed-account checks each month last year, representatives said.
Individuals and merchants who receive bad checks can report them to the check unit at 654-3092.
