Export Jump Expected: The government is predicting a resurgence in Taiwanese exports the next five months, revising more modest projections that had been based on relatively sluggish trade activity early in 1991. Taipei earlier this year had projected a 1991 trade surplus of $11.5 billion. However, exports have been accelerating in recent months, and the government now expects its trade surplus to match the $12.5 billion recorded in 1990. Contributing to the strong economic rebound was an 8.6% rise in Taiwan’s industrial production in May, the highest monthly leap since 8.74% in March of 1989.
