FAA Acts to Keep Ice Off McDonnell Wings: The Federal Aviation Administration announced several moves designed to keep ice off the wings of two widely used McDonnell Douglas planes, the MD-80 and an early version of the DC-9. An FAA official said the moves followed a number of incidents involving ice, including the possibility that ice played a role in the Dec. 27 crash-landing of an SAS MD-80 minutes after taking off from Stockholm. The FAA said directives would be issued to help detect so-called clear ice on the wings of MD-80s and DC-9s by requiring visual inspections before takeoff.
