Nation IN BRIEF : INDIANA : Bombings Plague City; Woman Dies

An elderly woman died in a rash of bombings in Hammond, Ind., but investigators have yet to find a motive. “These bombs are simple--and deadly,” said Jerry Singer of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which has 25 agents searching for clues in the heavily industrialized city of 80,000. The four nighttime explosions shattered windows in homes and damaged an apartment house and a restaurant, causing thousands of dollars in damage. Three of the bombs were attached to natural gas meters.
