The United States lost to the Commonwealth of Independent States, the former Soviet Union, 5-0, a day after upsetting Canada in the World Junior Championships at Fussen, Germany. Ildar Moukhometov faced 26 shots in beating the Americans. U.S. goalie Mike Dunham faced 64 shots.
CIS dominated the first period as Andei Nikolichine scored at 4:54 and Darius Kasparaitas made it 2-0 at 12:28. The victory improved CIS to 5-1, first overall, and dropped the United States to 4-2.
In other games, Sweden beat Germany, 10-1, and Finland defeated Switzerland, 7-3.
