Top-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia advanced to the singles quarterfinals and the doubles semifinals of the Australian Hardcourt Championships at Adelaide. In singles, Ivanisevic defeated Stefano Pescosolido of Italy, 6-4, 6-3, and in doubles, he combined with Marc Rosset of Switzerland to beat Stefan Edberg of Sweden, the world’s top-ranked singles player, and John Fitzgerald of Australia, 6-4, 6-2.
