Joan Benoit Samuelson, winner of the first Olympic women’s marathon in 1984, will not try for a place on this year’s U.S. marathon team at the trials Jan. 26 in Houston because of a recent illness. Instead, she will seek a spot on the 10,000-meter team at the U.S. track and field trials in June.
