The common wisdom is that today’s top baseball players are paid exorbitant salaries compared to their predecessors a generation ago. Not so, according to the Dec. 21 issue of The Economist. The respected London publication shows that if inflation is taken into account, Joe DiMaggio’s salary in 1940 was about 2 1/2 times as much as Darryl Strawberry’s in 1991.
With tongue in cheek, the magazine goes on to say that if the downward trend in real dollars continues, baseball players will be playing for nothing by 2024.
