A 16-year-old boy has surrendered to police investigating the shooting deaths of a Fresno State football star and his girlfriend.
The youth was booked into Fresno County Juvenile Hall for investigation of murdering Melvin Johnson, 21, and Lisa Kelly, 19, police said.
The Fresno Bee published an interview with the suspect’s older brother, Tony Phelps, 26. Phelps was quoted as saying he and his younger brothers had smoked marijuana and drunk beer for nearly eight hours before the shootings at the apartment of Kelly’s mother.
Police refused to identify the suspect because he is a minor.
Johnson was a 310-pound, two-time All-Big West offensive guard from Lynwood. He was to play in Saturday’s Hula Bowl.
