Tenneco to Trim 1,000 Jobs: Tenneco Inc. said it will lay off 1,000 salaried employees at its Newport News Shipbuilding unit in Virginia. The cuts are part of the Houston company’s previously announced plan to elminate 6,000 jobs, including 4,000 at the troubled JI Case farm and equipment unit. The moves will reduce by 9% the salaried work force of 11, 200. The cuts are part of a $2-billion restructuring program Tenneco launched in September to improve its financial health. It had a record $693-million loss in the third quarter of 1991.
