Unilever Unit Marketing Fake Fat: National Starch & Chemical Co. announced a series of fat substitutes made from modified starch compounds that are already being marketed. National Starch, a division of the Anglo-Dutch consumer products giant Unilever Group, calls its fake fat N-LITE. Gary Zwiercan, vice president and general manager for food products, would not say what products the starches are in because the company does not reveal its customers. Consumers will see only the line “modified food starch” on ingredient lists.
