A man who was struck by a car and killed as he tried to cross the 1500 block of Coronado Avenue in South San Diego was identified Wednesday as Raul Gaspar of Tijuana.
Gaspar, 34, died Tuesday morning at UC San Diego Medical Center after being hit by a car driven by Mike Evaro, 31, of Imperial Beach, and thrown through the windshield, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
Evaro was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. He was cited and released.
Gaspar’s death marked the first traffic fatality of 1992 on a San Diego city street, Robinson said. In 1991, 96 people died in traffic accidents in San Diego.
