CARSON CITY, Nev. — Gov. Bob Miller said Wednesday that 266 state workers will be laid off as part of his cost-cutting plan aimed at heading off a budget shortfall that could top $130 million.
Nearly half of the layoffs are in agencies that deal with the mentally ill and disturbed. The governor also chopped welfare benefits, laid off another 85 workers by shutting down a state prison in southern Nevada, closed an orphan’s home in Carson City, and delayed construction projects.
