If there is a single guaranteed no-fail perennial sure-fire cure for the blues in Orange County, it’s Sunday afternoons at the Capistrano Depot. It’s the perfect weekend formula for a good time, consisting of roughly equal parts of the following: good food, good drink, good company, trains, history and a New Orleans-St. Louis-Chicago-style jazz band that dares you to sit still.
Actually, the scales tip a bit in favor of the musicians, the Golden Eagle Jazz Band. These are guys with a good bit of gray in the hair who know how to play this music. The feeling is that of a lazy afternoon in a trackside honky-tonk that turns occasionally boisterous and freewheeling.
26701 Verdugo St., San Juan Capistrano. (714) 496-8181. Open daily for lunch, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; dinner, 5 to 9 p.m. Bar open from 11:30 a.m. to midnight. The Golden Eagle Jazz Band plays Dixieland music Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.
