Chip Industry Barometer Jumps: A key barometer of semiconductor industry activity increased dramatically in December. The book-to-bill ratio rose to 1.08 in December from a revised 1.01 in November, the Semiconductor Industry Assn. reported. The ratio compares bookings, or orders, of computer chips to billings, or product shipments. The San Jose-based association estimated total semiconductor shipments to the U.S. market at $15.4 billion in 1991, an increase of 6.5% over 1990’s $14.4 billion.
