3-Month-Old Infant Dies; Parents Are Held

A 3-month-old Pico Rivera boy who doctors said was the victim of abuse died Friday at a Long Beach hospital, and his parents are expected to be booked for investigation of murder.
The infant had been hooked to life-support systems at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, said hospital spokeswoman Beverly Harmeier. The child’s parents, Elizabeth Madrid, 18, and Edward Saavedra, 20, were being held without bail and the charges will be changed from attempted murder to murder, said Deputy Hal Grant.
The couple called 911 from their converted garage apartment in Pico Rivera late Thursday afternoon to report that their son was not breathing, said sheriff’s spokesman Roger Hom.
