A veteran Los Angeles police officer pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that he raped four women after threatening to arrest them unless they had sex with him.
Officer Garnier Beasley, 31, is also charged with shooting a fifth woman in the leg after paying her to perform a sexual act during an off-duty encounter.
In two cases, women were stopped by Beasley and accused of drug use, said district attorney’s spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons. In two other cases, she said, the officer said there were warrants outstanding on the women.
Beasley, an eight-year veteran assigned to the Southwest Division, is accused of preying on women from May to September of 1991. Bail was set at $500,000 and Beasley remains in custody. A second bail hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 22.
