Unstable Bluffs Will Be Shored Up

MISSION VIEJO — Work will begin in about three weeks to repair chronically unstable bluffs that caused 6-foot cracks to appear in a residential neighborhood.
With the City Council awarding a $317,000 contract to Clayton Engineering Inc. on Monday, residents living on Campo Moro and Ayamonte roads can look forward to seeing the hillsides and roads in their neighborhood stabilized by spring, said city officials.
The construction firm will be removing 6 to 8 feet of earth in some areas and reconstructing the street, said Dennis Wilberg, city engineer.
In late 1990, residents began noticing large cracks appearing on their patios and inside their homes. They complained to city engineers, who found that the slopes of the hillside neighborhood were slowing sliding downhill.
City officials said that overwatered landscaping in the area and clay-like soil conditions helped contribute to the deterioration of the slopes at Campo Moro.
The degeneration of the hills at Ayamonte, which intersects Campo Moro, was blamed on a broken underground water main.
