KITCHEN HELPER: Most house fires, the County Fire Department says, start in the kitchen--often in lower-income neighborhoods. That’s why the department is busy promoting homemade fire extinguishers: a coffee can filled with baking soda, with a total price under a dollar. The department will give you a label in vivid red that says “Fire Pail,” along with instructions. . . . “Some people mistakenly think that flour will do the same thing,” Fire Capt. Dan Young says. “It only makes a fire worse.”
