BEAR CROSSING: The Chipped Stone Bear, unearthed near Carlsbad in 1985 by Cypress College archeology professor Hank Koerper and his students, was declared the official state artifact last year and will finally have a permanent home Monday. Koerper and other artifact buffs will present the 2 1/2-inch prehistoric stone piece to the state in Sacramento. Koerper says the 8,000-year-old Indian artifact will eventually be kept at the California Indian Museum, near Sutter’s Fort.
