A whole generation read about the young Navy doctor whose humanitarianism inspired and moved us to care about the global community.
I now read, 30 years later, that Tom Dooley was a homosexual, which contributed to his being a puppet of the CIA and the Navy. One can only feel great empathy for Dooley for his having to suffer a terrible stigma inflicted by an intolerant society.
