A 41-year-old North Hollywood man who died in bed after it caught fire has been identified as Jose E. Baraona, Los Angeles police said Tuesday.
Baraona apparently suffocated Monday from smoke from the fire, which had been smoldering since noon, Detective Jessie Castillo said. Baraona’s wife, Lillian, found his body when she arrived at their house in the 7800 block of Goll Avenue about 5:30 p.m., Castillo said.
It was an accidental fire caused by a cigarette, Castillo said.
An autopsy Tuesday confirmed that Baraona died from extensive thermal burns and smoke inhalation, said Bob Dambacher, a coroner’s spokesman.
