Fullerton stayed within striking distance of a Freeway League girls’ basketball championship with a 50-47 victory over Troy at Fullerton Tuesday night.
Fullerton (13-5, 4-1 in league) finished the first round of league play one game behind La Habra. Fullerton also strengthened its hold on second place, as Troy (11-5, 3-2) dropped into third place, two games behind La Habra and a game behind Fullerton.
Sommer McLane had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Fullerton, which took advantage of its superior quickness against the taller Warriors. McLane was successful driving the baseline against Troy’s 1-3-1 zone in the first half, scoring 10 points on quick moves underneath.
Troy countered with a strong post attack against Fullerton’s man defense, but the Warriors made only three of 10 shots in the key in the second quarter. Troy’s inability to convert inside allowed Fullerton to take a 23-20 halftime lead.
Tiana Roberson scored seven points in the third quarter for Fullerton, helping her team extend its lead to 39-34 going into the fourth quarter. Troy’s shooting woes continued in the fourth quarter, as the Warriors missed their first eight shots from close range.
Fullerton opened a 43-34 lead with five minutes 25 seconds left, and Troy came no closer than three points the rest of the way.
Dede Logemann led Troy with 12 points. Roberson scored 12 for Fullerton.
