Updating the Constitution

Our American Constitution, marvelous though it is, is not sacred script. Thomas Jefferson--and now Gore Vidal (“Who Says the Republic Still Stands,” Commentary, Jan. 15)--has urged us to keep it updated.
One tragic anachronism in the Bill of Rights is its ban on gun (read muskets) control. It had a noble purpose--in the 18th Century, that is. But today it preserves the rights of killers and criminals.
Luckily, a constitutional amendment is possible. But such an updating won’t be made by congressmen who are campaign-funded and puppetized by the National Rifle Assn. The amendment will have to be passed by 39 state legislatures, goaded by citizens who have had it up to their earlobes with anarchy and terror.
