PLAYA DEL REY : Ex-DWP Employees Jailed for Building ‘Pot’ Farm

Two former Department of Water and Power workers were sentenced Tuesday to a year in County Jail and ordered to pay back more than $31,000 for building a secret underground marijuana farm beneath a Playa del Rey generating station.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert P. O’Neill said he would allow Boyd L. Duffin Jr., 38, and Richard V. Viduka, 32, to apply for work furlough. They were ordered to return to court to begin their jail sentence on May 5.

O’Neill also ordered each man to pay $15,702 to the DWP for the stolen equipment, supplies and work time used to build the subterranean farm.

Both men, who were fired by the DWP last May, pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges for building the two 10-by-40-foot underground rooms beneath a concrete slab at the 40-acre Scattergood steam plant. Although no marijuana was present when officials discovered the rooms, soil tests found traces of the plant.
