Vatican Looks at Israel Ties, Cardinal Says

NEW YORK — The Vatican, which for years has resisted establishing relations with Israel, is now looking at setting up diplomatic ties, New York Cardinal John O’Connor told a leading Jewish group Tuesday.
O’Connor, who has close relations with the Vatican and visited the Middle East last December, said both sides are interested in establishing formal diplomatic ties.
“It seemed to me there was a reaching out,” O’Connor told the World Jewish Congress.
“It seemed whereas for a long time Israel had been looking to the Vatican for signs that there was a possibility of diplomatic relations, I got the impression that now Rome was looking to Israel for signs,” he said.
