Data General to Lay Off 1,000: Data General Corp., which had been rebounding from past troubles, announced that it will lay off 1,000 workers and charge $46 million against earnings to pay for the cutbacks. The Westboro, Mass., computer maker, which employs about 8,100, said the layoffs will be worldwide, with a “significant” number of administrative positions being eliminated.
