Californians Reach Record 80% Recycling Rate: The 1991 recycling rates for beverage cans and bottles, announced by the state Department of Conservation, were 85% for aluminum cans, 71% for glass bottles and 56% for plastic containers, for an overall rate of 80%. This meets the goal of the Legislature’s recycling law. Recycling markets have been able to absorb all recyclable containers, the department said, despite earlier worries that such high numbers might overwhelm markets, forcing some cans and bottles to be sent to landfills.
