APOPKA, Fla. — Robbers held Miami Dolphin running back Sammie Smith at gunpoint and stole money he and six other football players raised over the weekend to help his hometown community.
Smith, 24, said Monday he hit one robber during the incident Saturday night, knocked over another and then ran away.
The thieves stole Smith’s Mercedes Benz convertible and $3,000 in cash, Smith said.
Smith and his friends signed autographs and played softball and basketball to raise about $800 to help the South Apopka Project, an effort to battle the area’s drug and poverty problems. He was going to contribute $2,200 of his own.
