Seagate Injunction Lifted: A federal appeals court in Minnesota has given Seagate Technology a victory over IBM by allowing a Seagate scientist to return to his research project at the company’s Bloomington, Minn., plant. The U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned an injunction issued in December by a federal court in St. Paul that had temporarily banned former IBM magnetics expert Peter Bonyhard from continuing his new job as technology director in Seagate’s Advanced Components Division. The injunction had been imposed pending the outcome of a trade secrets lawsuit filed against Seagate by IBM last year. That suit, which remains unresolved, concerns a computer product that Bonyhard is helping Seagate develop that would dramatically increase the amount of data that can be recorded on a disk drive data storage device.
