COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans’ Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short in Loss to USC

Dante Powell hit an RBI double in the top of the ninth, but Cal State Fullerton’s rally fell one run short as the Titans lost to USC, 4-3, Tuesday at Dedeaux Field.
Fullerton’s Steve Sisco took a called third strike from USC’s Ryan Henderson with runners on second and third to end the game.
Phil Nevin hit a two-run double in the third inning for Fullerton (25-11). USC is 20-17.
In nonconference baseball:
Christ College 10, The Masters 8--Armando Diaz doubled and had two RBIs for Christ College (22-8, 9-3).
Cal Poly Pomona 9, Chapman 7--Chris Hunt hit a double to drive in Scott Daniels, who scored the final run for Pomona (10-22). Chris Briones hit a three-run homer in the eighth for Chapman (24-12).
UC Irvine 4, Cal State Los Angeles 2--Mike Calvert pitched a complete game for UC Irvine (16-14), striking out four and allowing two unearned runs.
In nonconference softball:
Chapman 2-0, Dominguez Hills 1-5--Dawn Poulson drove in Jennifer Wagner with the winning run for Chapman (17-12, 1-3) in the first game.
Southern California College 3-2, Cal Lutheran 1-1--Shannon Saylor earned the victory in the first game and pitched a scoreless seventh in the second game to earn her third save for host SCC (18-7-1). Cal Lutheran is 14-9.
In Big West Conference women’s tennis:
CS Long Beach 5, CS Fullerton 4--Michelle Velli won in No. 3 singles and Natalie Leles won in No. 6 singles for Long Beach (8-11). Roseanne Alva won at No. 1 singles for Fullerton (0-19, 0-7).
