France Pays $320,000 for First Draft of ‘Bolero’

PARIS — France on Wednesday purchased the first draft of Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero” for $320,000 at an auction, officials said.
The government matched the final bid of a prospective private buyer at the Drouot auction house, the auction house said. French law allows government preemption in cases when art, sculpture or antiques are considered part of the national heritage.
The score dates to 1928. It was handwritten in pencil by the composer, who went on to modify it considerably.
