‘Bolero’ Bought: The first draft of Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero” has been purchased at auction for $320,000 by the government of France, which will place it in the National Library. The government matched the final bid of a prospective private buyer, and by doing so, won the bid. French law allows government preempting in cases when art, sculpture or antiques are considered part of the national heritage. The score dates to 1928, and was handwritten in pencil by the composer, who went on to modify it considerably. It was found in the United States among archives of Lucien Garban, a friend of the composer.
