EASTSIDE : Study on Revitalizing 2 Communities Kicked Off

Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alatorre was joined Thursday by about 30 community leaders and residents of Boyle Heights and El Sereno to inaugurate a yearlong study to devise revitalization for 5,400 acres in the two communities.

The kickoff, replete with balloons and mariachi music at La Plaza de la Raza in Lincoln Heights, is part of an aggressive campaign to involve residents in the process to spruce up the two Eastside communities.

Among those in attendance was Alex P. Salazar, chairman of a 36-person citizens advisory group that will recommend projects.

Alatorre, whose 14th District includes Boyle Heights and El Sereno, said he did not want to influence what projects might be undertaken, preferring to wait for the recommendations from the citizens group and Barrio Planners, an East Los Angeles firm that is spearheading the $160,000 study.
