Peninsula’s Mulligan Is Named Player of the Year

All five Peninsula High starters have been named to the the All-Southern Section Division I girls’ basketball team, and point guard Kristen Mulligan has been chosen player of the year by the Amateur Athletic Foundation/First Interstate Bank board of sports journalists.
Mulligan, a 5-foot-7 senior bound for Auburn, averaged 10.9 points and led the Lady Panthers in assists and steals. Her play was instrumental in helping Peninsula (33-0) win state and mythical national titles.
Joining Mulligan on the All-Division I first team were three of her Peninsula teammates: 6-5 center Jeffra Gausepohl, 6-3 forward Monique Morehouse and forward Mimi McKinney, who was recently named the top sophomore in the state by Cal-Hi Sports newsletter. Morehouse earned All-Southern Section honors for the third consecutive season.
Peninsula guard Raquel Alotis was named to the second team.
State Division II runner-up Bishop Montgomery, with three selections, led five South Bay players on the All-Division II team. Knight point guard Mirlen Martinez and forward Keisa Smith were named to the first team, and forward Nicole Haynes earned second-team honors.
Torrance forward Tiffany Fujimoto, the Pioneer League most valuable player, was named to the first team and North Torrance point guard Lori Delapina was a second-team choice.
Westlake’s Lauren Goldstine, a 6-foot senior who averaged 22.7 points, was named Division II player of the year.
Five area players were named to the All-Division III team. First-team honors went to Morningside center Tina Thompson, the South Bay’s leading scorer with a 23.7 average, and St. Bernard guard Joi Turner.
Two other St. Bernard players--center Olympia Scott and guard Kelly Shimabukuro--were named to the second team, as was South Torrance forward Stephanie Pfau. Scott and Pfau are sophomores.
Forward Jody Anton of state champion Brea-Olinda was named Division III player of the year. She averaged 17.2 points.
