19 Commended for Rescuing Teens

For their efforts in the April 1 rescue of two Pasadena teen-agers from the rushing current of the Rubio Wash and the Rio Hondo, 19 San Gabriel police and firefighters received commendations Tuesday from the San Gabriel City Council.
Those honored were cited for their key roles in saving a 13-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy who were swept along the rain-swollen Rubio Wash where it empties into the Rio Hondo near Valley Boulevard in Rosemead.
The police were Sgt. Eugene P. O’Connor; Detectives Michael Hudson, George Cortez, Edward A. Hache and Daniel V. Russo, and Officers Stan F. Borup, James S. Kermode, Scott A. Morrison and Dennis M. Tracy.
Fire Department employees were Battalion Chief Raymond D. Payne; Capt. Nickolas Ramirez; Firefighters Dennis M. Barwick, Wayne J. Eggleston, Scott R. Harvey and James J. Miller; Fire Cadets John Adkins and Fred Sutton; Dispatcher Marilyn J. Espalin, and Engineer John B. Macrae.
* Dr. Donald Norquist, an orthopedic surgeon, has been named board chairman of St. Luke Medical Center in Pasadena.
Norquist, who has been on the hospital’s medical staff since 1973, was chief of staff in 1980-82 and chief of surgery in 1991.
