COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Pound Nevada Las Vegas With Five Homers

Cal State Fullerton hit five homers, including two by Bret Hemphill, to beat Nevada Las Vegas, 9-6, in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday at Amerige Park in Fullerton.
The score was tied, 3-3, going into the bottom of the sixth when Phil Nevin led off with his 17th home run for Fullerton (27-11, 10-4 in conference). Craig Fairbrother singled, but was picked off first base. Jason Moler doubled and Tony Banks hit a two-run home run to put the Titans ahead, 7-4.
Hemphill then hit his second home run of the game and sixth of the season. He had hit a two-run home run in the second. D.C. Olsen also hit a home run for Fullerton.
James Popoff (7-1) allowed eight hits and five earned runs in seven innings to improve to 7-1. Las Vegas is 20-14, 5-6.
In nonconference baseball:
Cal State Sacramento 7, UC Irvine 0--Roland DeLaMaza and Eric Wagner combined on a four-hitter and the Hornets scored six times in the seventh inning at UC Irvine.
The Anteaters (16-16) advanced only one runner past second base. Cal State Sacramento is 23-13.
In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:
Christ College Irvine 10-6, Cal Baptist 6-4--Armando Diaz had three doubles and two runs batted in and Mike Adams had a two-run home run and pitched 4 2/3 innings for the victory in the first game. Daryl Lowe had a two-run home run in the second game as visiting Christ College Irvine (25-8, 11-3) completed the sweep. Cal Baptist is 11-23, 6-9.
In Big West Conference softball:
New Mexico State 1-0, Cal State Fullerton 0-7--Tiffany Boyd (21-7) pitched a three-hitter in the nightcap at Fullerton for her 13th consecutive victory.
In men’s track and field:
Fresno State 114, UC Irvine 71, San Diego State 18--Anteater sophomore Dustin James won the 200 meters (21.28 seconds) and 400 meters (47.03), both season bests.
In women’s track and field:
Fresno State 114, UC Irvine 71, San Diego State 18--Irvine’s Tracy Goodrich won the 3,000 and 5,000 at Fresno State.
