Former University City High pitcher Mike Saipe scattered 10 hits in six innings to help the University of San Diego baseball team defeat host Chapman, 6-5, in a nonconference game Thursday. Saipe, a freshman, improved to 6-3. The Toreros are 21-21.
Both teams scored one run in the third inning, three in the sixth and one in the seventh. A USD single run in the second proved the difference. USD’s Chad Boyd and Chapman’s Chris Briones each hit two-run homers in the sixth. Chapman is 28-15.
