In other nonconference baseball:
San Diego 6, Chapman 5--With two outs and one on in the bottom of the ninth, Buster Nietzke’s long fly was caught at the left-field fence to end Chapman’s chances. Chris Briones hit his sixth home run of the season--a two-run shot--in a three-run sixth for the Panthers (28-15). Chad Boyd hit a two-run homer in the sixth for San Diego (21-21).
Christ College Irvine 11, Redlands 5--Lonny Zimmerman went three for four, scored twice and drove in two runs for the host Eagles (27-8). Mike Adams (8-3) pitched eight innings for the victory and also drove in two runs.
In Big West Conference baseball:
Nevada Las Vegas 7, UC Irvine 6--Nick Kuster’s two-out, ninth-inning single drove in Dan Madsen with the winning run at Las Vegas.
Irvine (17-19, 5-8 in conference) had tied the score in the top of the ninth when Steve Ott’s one-out single scored Matt Filson. Ott drove in three runs.
Tim McDonnell and Dave Dieter were each four for five for the Anteaters. Irvine’s David Bladow (7-4) pitched a complete game, allowing seven runs--four earned--and 10 hits.
The Rebels are 21-17, 6-7.
