La Verne : Police Chief to Retire
Police Chief Wes Stearns will retire in October but will use accumulated vacation time to leave office in July, according to a city report.
Stearns began his career in La Verne in 1964 as a patrolman and was appointed chief in 1981, the report said. During his tenure, the city has had one of the lowest crime rates in the San Gabriel Valley.
In 1984, Stearns became president of the San Gabriel Valley Police Chiefs’ Assn. and in 1988 was elected president of the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs’ Assn.
Stearns and his wife, Lois, are 27-year residents of La Verne and will remain in town after his retirement, although they plan to build a vacation home in Oregon.
