ALHAMBRA — Bruce Peppin, superintendent of the Alhambra City and High School Districts since 1974, will leave the post June 1, it was announced Tuesday.
The school board hired Deputy Supt. Heber Meeks as Peppin’s replacement.
Peppin, 65, will be a paid consultant to the districts until June 30, 1993, when his contract expires.
He will continue to draw an annual $94,000 salary, the amount he receives as superintendent, Peppin said Wednesday.
Peppin did not give a reason for his decision to leave, saying only that “there comes a time when you need to think about retirement. It’s just one of those things that has to happen.”
The districts, which include 13 elementary schools, three high schools and one continuation school, were rocked last year by reports of fighting between students from various ethnic groups. Some parents accused the district of ignoring racial tensions and formed a coalition to demand improved multicultural education and disciplinary procedures.
More recently, voters in San Gabriel seceded from the Alhambra High School District and will form their own, a move Peppin and other Alhambra administrators opposed.
Peppin said criticism related to those incidents did not prompt him to leave his job.
