COUNTYWIDE : Deadline Is Near for Disaster Loans

Business owners and individuals who suffered property damage during February’s storms must file for low-interest disaster loans by Monday to be eligible, the Small Business Administration has announced.

Fewer than one-third of the 3,000 storm victims who received applications to apply for the federal disaster loans in five Southern California counties have returned the forms, said Oscar Wright, a regional administrator for the agency.

Response has been better in Ventura County, with 123 applications returned out of 229 that were distributed, said SBA spokeswoman Natalie Toft.

Wright said time is quickly running out for those who have not filed.

“I’m concerned that if these storm victims delay, they will lose the opportunity to apply for the low-interest loans which are currently available to them,” Wright said.

The SBA has reviewed more than one-third of the completed applications and has granted loans to 69% of those, Toft said. Loans to date have totaled $4.3 million, she said.

Applicants can receive help completing the forms at an SBA disaster outreach center at 657 W. Duarte Road in Arcadia, or by calling 1-800-488-5323.
