PREP ROUNDUP : Fountain Valley Needs 10 Innings to Knock Off Ocean View in Softball

Fountain Valley, the fifth-ranked team in Orange County, scored in the 10th inning to beat Ocean View, 1-0, in a Sunset League softball game Wednesday at Ocean View.
Carla Jacobs, led off the 10th inning with a single, and scored from third on Danny Rodriguez’s bloop single to left for Fountain Valley (11-3, 6-0 in league).
Rodriguez (6-1) pitched a complete game and retired the side in order in the 10th to close out the game.
Ocean View is 9-8, 4-2.
In Sea View League softball:
University 14, Newport Harbor 4 (5 innings, mercy rule)--The Trojans (12-8, 2-1 in league) wrapped up the victory with 10 runs in the first inning at home. Nicole Shammas went three for three and Kristen Wilson went two for three with a home run and three RBIs. Michele Ponce (9-3) struck out seven in her four innings to get the victory. Newport Harbor dropped to 7-5, 1-2.
In South Coast League softball:
Woodbridge 23, Corona del Mar 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Alison Johnsen had a grand slam and a double and Stacy Washington (8-2) had a no-hitter, striking out six. Woodbridge (19-3, 3-0) is ranked fourth in Orange County.
El Toro 1, Capistrano Valley 0--Jen Claridge had an RBI double in the fourth for visiting El Toro (3-0 in league). Capistrano Valley is 6-8-2, 1-2.
Irvine 2, Dana Hills 1--Natalie Tomoguchi had two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for host Irvine (10-5, 2-1). The Vaqueros trailed, 1-0, entering the seventh, but Monika Hollstein walked with one out and scored one out later on Tomoguchi’s home run.
San Clemente 5, Mission Viejo 2--Samantha Mercier had three hits for visiting San Clemente. Mission Viejo is 5-11, 1-2.
In Orange League golf:
Valencia 225, Western 226--Freshman John Lee shot a four-over 40 as Valencia beat Western by a shot at Los Coyotes County Club in Buena Park.
Sophomore Tiger Woods had a 41 for Western.
In Century League golf:
Foothill 209, Canyon 225--Matt Mondford shot a one-over-par 37 for Foothill (11-5, 4-1). Alicia Allison shot a 43.
In nonleague golf:
Laguna Hills 201, La Quinta 224--Aaron Brunstetter shot a one-over-par 36 for host Laguna Hills (11-6) at Pacific Golf Club in San Clemente.
In Century League boys’ volleyball:
Western 3, Villa Park 1--Eric Temple had 16 kills for host Western (4-4, 2-2), which won 14-16, 15-9, 15-13, 15-12. Mike Shihad had 12 kills for Villa Park (3-10, 1-3).
In Century League girls’ swimming:
Villa Park 95, Foothill 75--With strong swims from juniors Catherine Pharris, Jennifer Blasi, Michelle Morris and freshman Mary Krill, Villa Park beat Foothill for the first time in school history. Pharris won the 50 freestyle (25.80) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.22) and Morris, who made two CIF quailfying times, swept in the 200 freestyle (2:00.20) and the 500 freestyle (5:19.80). Blasi took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.22) and the 200 individual medley (2:20.03). Krill won the 100 freestyle swimming a 58.49 and the 100 backstroke (1:05.44). Villa Park is 9-1, 4-0.
In Empire League girls’ swimming:
Los Alamitos 11, Cypress 59--Adrienne Paradeise won four events for host Los Alamitos (5-2, 4-0).
In South Coast League boys’ swimming:
Mission Viejo 111, Capistrano Valley 59--Adam Grodzki swam the 50-freestyle in 21.79 seconds, the third best time in the Southern Section this season, for Mission Viejo (4-0 in league) at Saddleback College.
In Orange League boys’ swimming:
Brea-Olinda 96, Western 68--Bill Brown won the 50 and 100 freestyle races, qualifying for the Southern Section meet in both events for host Brea-Olinda (4-3, 3-0). Scott Estrada also qualified in the 100 butterfly and Tim Bostrom qualified for the 500 freestyle.
In Orange League boys’ tennis:
Valencia 11, Brea-Olinda 7--Roger Okamoto swept at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 7-5, 6-1, for visiting Valencia (5-0 in league).
Western 17, Savanna 1--James Yu swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for host Western (4-1 in league), losing only one game. Savanna fell to 4-11, 1-4.
In Sunset League:
Huntington Beach 13, Westminster 5--Brian Yee and Tony Newton won at No.1 doubles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 for the Oilers (8-7, 6-3 in league) and No. 3 singles player Matt Lear also swept, 6-3, 6-0, 6-4. Westminster is 6-8, 3-6.
In Empire League boys’ volleyball:
Esperanza 3, Cypress 0--Brad Goldston had 16 kills for host Esperanza (8-2, 4-0) which won, 15-4, 15-6, 15-10.
In Garden Grove League boys’ volleyball:
Pacifica 3, Kennedy 1--Tony Howze had 13 kills for visiting Pacifica (6-7, 4-5), which won 15-13, 15-4, 13-15, 15-10. Kennedy is 4-5, 4-5.
