LOS ANGELES : Judge Tells School District Not to Lobby on Initiative
- Share via
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge issued a preliminary injunction Friday prohibiting the Los Angeles Unified School District from using public resources to criticize a proposed “parental choice” initiative.
The ruling, issued by Judge Robert H. O’Brien, bars the district from using public funds or other resources to promote a position for or against the initiative, which would provide tuition vouchers to children wanting to attend private or parochial schools.
The district has denied that it acted illegally when the Board of Education adopted a resolution opposing the ballot proposal and broadcasting the meeting at which the action was taken.
The Excellence Through Choice In Education League, which is sponsoring the proposal, filed suit against the district April 16. The group has filed similar suits against four other school districts, charging them with misusing public resources.
